Gathering Souvenirs

SOUVENIR: a reminder of a place visited, an occasion, or a person; a memento
CHRONICLES: records, narrations, or reports about events or experiences

• JOURNAL: I am a faithful journaler when we travel. My notes, sometimes taken during the day but more often written at the end of the day, help me remember things I would have otherwise forgotten by the end of the trip, or even by the next day. Because I write at least a few words about every major stop along the way, my notes also help me identify my pictures later on.

• READING: One of my favorite things to do in connection with travel is to find a book related in some way to at least one of the destinations on my trip. Sometimes I read the book before I leave, sometimes during the trip, and sometimes after I get home. The books may be history, biography, or fiction, but I find reading related material deepens my understanding of and appreciation for the places I visit.

• FOOD: My husband loves to eat, and he especially loves to try new and unusual foods. Tasting local cuisine really enhances our travel enjoyment.  In addition, we almost always come home with at least one ingredient to try in our own cooking, such as a spice, sauce, or paste, and we like to search for recipes that help us to re-experience some of our memorable dining moments.

• METHODS OF TRAVEL: Planes (jets, float planes, ski planes, etc.), helicopters, trains, automobiles, our own feet, boats (cruise ships, row boats, tour boats, kayaks, mokoro boats, ferries) cattle carts, bicycles, buggies, tuk tuks, camels, horses, elephants, hot air balloons--we have tried and loved them all.

  1. Hello, I'm impressed by your travels and blog! My mother was also born in Pforzheim and, like you, I'm an English professor. I would very much like to get in touch with you for a possible interview for a project I'm working on about Pforzheim. I have received a Fulbright to write and research two books (poetry and creative nonfiction) in Pforzheim in 2024-2025. My book projects concern, among other things, the 1945 bombing. I'd be thrilled to have the opportunity to speak with you soon! I can be reached at apeary@salemstate.edu Best wishes, Alexandria
